Charlotte Knobloch Thanks Us for Our Support

English follows

On Rosh Hashanah, hateful graffiti threatening Mrs. Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Jewish Community of Munich, was discovered in Munich, Germany.

Immediately after the holiday ended, Arie Olewski, Chairman of the organization, wrote a letter of support to Knobloch. She is a 93-year-old Jewish woman and a central figure in the life of German Jewry.

Here is the letter:

Dear Mrs. Charlotte Knobloch,

We heard about the hateful graffiti against you that appeared in Munich on Rosh Hashanah.

Such graffiti truly belongs in the dustbin of history. It was written by miserable, spineless cowards.

For a little over 80 years Germany held firm, and now it seems it may be returning to the dark place in which it once wallowed — as if nothing had been learned.

At Bergen-Belsen today as well, we — the Israeli organization of Bergen-Belsen survivors, the largest and most active in the world — have been shamelessly boycotted since the massacre of October 7, 2023 by the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation, and the government there does not lift a finger.

Against the backdrop of rising antisemitism around the world, hiding behind anti-Israelism, we call on you not to be afraid. We will do everything to support you and the good Jews of Germany.

We stand with you. You are our sister!

With love,
Arie Olewski
Chairman
Irgun Sh’erit Hapleta Bergen-Belsen in Israel

Now Mrs. Knobloch’s moving reply has arrived:

Dear Mr. Olewski,

Thank you very much for your letter and your warm words. Unfortunately, only today have I found the time to thank you for them from the bottom of my heart. The times we live in are not easy — not for our society as a whole, and certainly not for its Jewish members.

Between rising extremism and erupting hatred of Jews, there is a growing feeling among Jews today that the fires breaking out everywhere can hardly be put out all at once anymore. One of the reasons is that too many people prefer not to see themselves as affected, and turn their backs on problems that seemingly are not theirs.

That is precisely why I am so grateful when people like you do not remain silent in this situation, but instead support us with an expression of solidarity.

This is no small thing. Beyond the physical threats from outside, the hardest part is the growing feeling that the wider society is abandoning us in the face of these threats.

That is why every voice like yours, which counters this despairing conclusion, is decisive and important. It helps us, as Jews, to get through the present time — and in doing so, it also strengthens the cohesion by which and from which we all live.

May your example serve as a model for many!

With sincere thanks and warm regards,
Yours,
Charlotte Knobloch
Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria
