לראשונה מזה דורות, הקול הישראלי לא יישמע בטקס לציון יום השחרור בגרמניה
ביום שני 15 באפריל 1945 חל יום השחרור ה-79 לשחרור מחנה הריכוז ברגן-בלזן בגרמניה בידי הצבא הבריטי. 15 באפריל נקבע כיום החשוב ביותר לניצולי בלזן ולמשפחותיהם, שראו בו יום הולדת שני. יצויין כי בישראל חיה קהילת ניצולי ברגן-בלזן הגדולה והפעילה ביותר בעולם.
מדי שנה עולים נציגי ארגון שארית הפליטה ברגן-בלזן בישראל לאנדרטה היהודית באתר המחנה לשעבר, שהוקמה בשנת 1946. ליד האנדרטה מתקיים טקס מסורתי יהודי הכולל תפילות “קדיש” ו”אל מלא רחמים”. כמו כן המסורת היא שנציג הארגון בישראל נושא נאום, ולאחר מכן מושר ההמנון הלאומי “התקווה”, כפי שהניצולים שרו אז ברגשות מעורבים. בוודאי שלאחר טבח 7 באוקטובר היה מצופה שנציג מישראל יישא דברים.
השנה, הופתעה הנהלת הארגון בישראל לגלות במקרה שהמועד המקודש להם ולהוריהם נדחה לחודש מאי ללא התראה או התייעצות וללא סיבה הגיונית. לא זו בלבד, אלא שבכל הטקס אין מקום לקול מישראל, דווקא בשנה קשה זו.
הנהלת הארגון בישראל חוששת שמאורע חמור זה הוא סימן לבאות, לאחר שהשלטונות הגרמנים שמנהלים את אתר הזיכרון ברגן-בלזן כנראה השתלטו עליו לחלוטין, ולא הותירו מקום לכל שיקול דעת אחר מצד הארגון היהודי בישראל. כתגובה ראשונה, ההנהלה בישראל שוקלת ניתוק הקשרים עם האחראים בגרמניה.
רקע על המצבה היהודית: עד לאפריל 1946 שימשה אנדרטת עץ זמנית את אלפי הניצולים שלא היה להם קבר להשתטח עליו. אנדרטת האבן הוקמה בידי רפאל אולבסקי, נציג הוועד היהודי המרכזי במחנה העקורים, ובסיוע חייל הבריגדה היהודית יהושע בגון.
על אנדרטת האבן חרט סתת מצבות גרמני את הטקסט הבא על פי אותיות מצוירות בעברית:
עלה הכורת עלינו
יזכור אל
עם ישראל ותבל כולה
את ג’ רבבות היהודים
שנטרפו ביד הזדון הנאצית
במחנה ריכוז ברגן-בלזן.

במלאת שלושים שנה לשחרור ברגן-בלזן בשנת 1975, יזם היו”ר רפאל אולבסקי הבאת לוח-שיש מישראל, שהוצמד לגוף המצבה המקורית מיום השנה הראשון לשחרור. על הלוח נחרט באבן: “כי אבן מקיר תזעק” (חבקוק ב’, י”א), “הנני יִסַד בציון אבן” (ישעיהו כ”ח, ט”ז), וכן הטקסט הזה: “ניצולי ברגן-בלזן שנאחזו בארץ, הביאו את האבן הזאת מהרי ירושלים, במלאת שנת השלושים לשחרורם. ארגון שארית הפליטה ברגן-בלזן בישראל, אייר תשל”ה, אפריל 1975“.

On Monday, April 15, 1945, the 79th day of liberation will be marked for the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany by the British Army. April 15th was designated as the most important day for the Belsen survivors and their families, who regarded it as their second birthday.
Every year, representatives of the survivor’s organization of Bergen-Belsen in Israel attend the Jewish memorial at the site of the former camp. The Jewish memorial was erected in 1946. Near the memorial, a traditional Jewish ceremony is annually held and includes the prayers “Kaddish” and “El Male Rahamim (God is full of mercy)”. Then the tradition is that a Jew from the organization in Israel gives a speech and then the national anthem “Hitkva” is sung, as the survivors sang then with mixed emotions. Certainly, after the October 7th massacre, it was surely expected that a representative from Israel would speak.
This year, the board of the organization in Israel was totally surprised to discover by mere chance that the sacred date for them and their parents was shifted to May for no logical reason. Not only that, but in the whole ceremony there is no place for a voice from Israel, especially in this difficult year.
The board of the organization in Israel fears that this serious incident is a sign of things to come, after that the German authorities who manage the memorial site have apparently completely taken over it, leaving no room for any other consideration on the part of the Jewish organization in Israel. It should be noted that Israel is home to the largest and most active community of Bergen-Belsen survivors in the world. As a first response, the management in Israel is considering severing ties with those responsible in Germany.
Background on the Jewish tombstone:
Until April 1946, a temporary wooden memorial served the thousands of survivors who did not have a grave to shed a tear on. The stone monument was erected by Rafael Olewski, the representative of the Central Jewish Committee in the displaced persons camp, with the assistance of the Jewish Brigade soldier Yehoshua Begon. On the stone monument, a German gravestone mason engraved the following text based on cartoon letters in Hebrew:
Israel and the world shall remember
thirty thousand Jews
exterminated in the concentration camp
of Bergen-Belsen
at the hands of the murderous Nazis.
Earth conceal not the blood
shed on thee!

On the thirtieth anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen in 1975, the Israeli chairman Rafael Olewski initiated the bringing of a marble tablet from Israel, which was attached to the body of the original tombstone from the first anniversary of the liberation. It reads: “The stone of the wall will cry out” (Habakkuk 2:11) and “I will establish a stone in Zion” (Isaiah 28:16), as well as this text: “The Bergen-Belsen survivors who live in Israel, brought this stone from the Jerusalem mountains, on the thirtieth anniversary of their liberation. The Bergen-Belsen survivors’ organization in Israel, 1975, April 1975”.
