ב-15 באפריל 1945 שיחרר הצבא הבריטי את הגיהינום של מחנה הריכוז ברגן-בלזן, הגדול ביותר על אדמת גרמניה. העולם הזדעזע למראה הזוועות של אלפי גוויות מתגוללות בכל מקום, ואלפי צללי-אדם על סף המוות. שישים אלף איש ואישה הצטופפו בצריפי המחנה, רובם חולים במצב קשה, מורעבים, צמאים, מותשים וחולים. בני משפחותיהם נרצחו ונשרפו באכזריות במחנות הריכוז וההשמדה של הנאצים. מחודש ינואר ועד לשחרור באפריל מתו בברגן-בלזן 35 אלף איש. גם לאחר שחרור המחנה, תנאי הכליאה הקשים הכריעו רבים מהניצולים, וארבעה עשר אלף מתוכם מתו מרעב וממחלות בימים הראשונים שלאחר השחרור. רבים מהם היו שריד אחרון למשפחתם.
ברגן-בלזן היה היחיד שהפך עם שחרורו למחנה עקורים ולמרכז הפעילות של שארית הפליטה באזור הכיבוש הבריטי. הוא היה מופת ליוזמתם של הניצולים, ליצירתה של מערכת שלטון עצמי – כמודל למדינה יהודית עצמאית 3 שנים בטרם הקמת מדינת ישראל! – להתארגנות הלאומית של שארית הפליטה ולמאבק לעלייה לארץ ישראל.
עם עלייתם של אלפי ניצולי המחנה לישראל, ובהם רבים מראשי הוועד היהודי המרכזי בברגן-בלזן, החל משנת 1949, הוקם ארגון שארית הפליטה ברגן-בלזן בישראל, והוא פעיל עד היום. הארגון הישראלי הוא הגדול מסוגו בעולם. חברים בו מאות ניצולים ובני הדורות הבאים.
טקסי הזיכרון לציון היום הזה, שתוכננו השנה בגרמניה בהשתתפות אח”מים מכל העולם, בוטלו. במקומם התקיים טקס סימלי מצומצם בנוכחות סטפן וייל ראש ממשלת נידרזאקסן, ד”ר גבריאלה אנדריאה נשיאת הלאנדטאג בנידרזאקסן, עו”ד מיכאל פירסט נשיא הקהילות היהודיות במדינה זו וד”ר ינס-כריסטיאן וגנר מנכ”ל קרן אתרי ההנצחה שם.
נשיא המדינה ראובן (רובי) ריבלין פירסם מכתב אישי לניצולים לקראת יום השחרור ה-75 של ברגן-בלזן: “אתם, יקיריי, שורדי השואה ותלאות המלחמה, אתם גיבורי השואה. מצאתם את הכוח להתנער מאפר המשרפות ומהאדמה הספוגה בדמעות ובדם – ולבחור בחיים. בניתם בית לאומי ופרטי, הקמתם משפחות, יצרתם חיים חדשים, הגשמתם חלומות והייתם השראה לאומה ולעולם כולו. העיסוק שלכם בזיכרון ובהנצחת נספי השואה מבטיח שנזכור את אחינו ואחיותינו, ושההיסטוריה לא תישכח, לא תטושטש ולא תעוות. זהו צו מוסרי חשוב מאין כמותו. זוהי השעה להעביר את לפיד הזיכרון ואת שליחות ההנצחה לדורות הבאים”.
בול יום השואה לשנת 2020 מוקדש למחווה של מדינת ישראל לתופעה הייחודית של מחנה העקורים ברגן-בלזן. פרק זה נעלם, למרבה הצער, בין דפי ההיסטוריה. הבול מציג את הכרזתו של הוועד היהודי המרכזי של שארית הפליטה בקונגרס הראשון של שארית הפליטה בברגן-בלזן כבר בספטמבר 1945: “פיתחו את שערי ארץ ישראל!” כרזה זו מופיעה גם על שער הגיליון החגיגי של ביטאון שארית הפליטה בברגן-בלזן “אוּנְדזֶער שְטִימֶע” – “קוֹלֵנוּ”. עיתון זה ממשיך להופיע גם היום בישראל ומופץ בכל העולם.
15 April 2020: 75 years since the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp: No international ceremony in Germany; Message of Israel President Rivlin; and a new official Israeli stamp to mark the historic event
On April 15, 1945, the British Army liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, the largest on German soil. The world was shocked at the sight of thousands of unburied corpses scattered everywhere, and thousands of skeletons. 60,000 people were crowded in the camp barracks, most of them seriously ill, starving, thirsty, exhausted and on the brink of death. Their families were murdered and brutally burned in Nazi concentration and extermination camps. From January to April 1945, 35,000 people died in Bergen-Belsen. Due to the harsh conditions 14,000 of them died of starvation and disease in the first days after liberation. Many of them were a last remnant of their family.
Bergen-Belsen was the only one which, upon its release, became a DP camp and the center of activity of the Holocaust survivors in the British zone. It became a model of the initiative of the survivors, who created a Jewish self-governing system – 3 years before the establishment of the State of Israel! – and of national organization of the Holocaust survivors and the struggle for Aliyah to Eretz Israel.
With the immigration of thousands of Belsen survivors to Israel, including many of the leaders of the Bergen-Belsen Central Jewish Committee, and for the first time in the world, our Bergen-Belsen survivors’ organization was established in Israel in 1949, and remains active to this day. The Israeli organization is the largest of its kind in the world, with hundreds of survivors and next generations.
Memorial ceremonies to mark 75 years of the Liberation of Bergen Belsen in April 15th, planned this year in Germany with the presence of VIPs from all over the world, were canceled and a symbolic ceremony took place with the participation of Stephan Weil Prime, Minister of Lower Saxony; Dr. Gabriele Andretta, President of the Landtag; Michael Fürst, President of the National Association of Jewish communities of Lower Saxony; and Dr. Jens-Christian Wagner, Director of the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation.
Israel President Reuben (Ruby) Rivlin published a personal letter to the Bergen-Belsen survivors: “You, my dear survivors, are the heroes of the Holocaust. You’ve built a national and a private home, created families and new lives, realized dreams, and inspired the nation and the entire world. Your activities of remembering the Holocaust and its victims are a moral command and model for future generations.”
The official Israeli Holocaust Day Stamp for 2020 is dedicated – as the State of Israel’s homage – to the unique phenomenon of the Bergen-Belsen DP camp. This chapter, unfortunately, disappeared between the pages of history. The stamp shows the declaration of the Central Jewish Remission Committee during the first congress of the Holocaust survivors in Bergen-Belsen as early as September 1945: “Open the gates of the Land of Israel!” This poster also appeared on the cover of the festive issue of the Bergen-Belsen Yiddish magazine “Unzer Sztyme” – “Our Voice”. This newspaper appears also today in Israel and is distributed around the world.
