Terrible days at the beginning of October

English follows

The Blood Bond

These are terrible days, the beginning of October. As if the "Days of Awe" between the New Year (may it be a good one for us) and Yom Kippur were not enough, more hard days have now been added.

In 2025, at the ceremony marking 80 years since the liberation of our parents and of our fellow members of the organization, we laid wreaths on behalf of our organization: one at the general memorial, the obelisk, and the other at the Jewish memorial from 1946. My father, Raphael Olewski, of blessed memory, was responsible for erecting that memorial and for the text inscribed on it. He was assisted by Jewish Brigade soldier Yehoshua Bagon, of blessed memory, a dear man.

In a time of sorrow, the Jewish military force extended a helping hand to the survivors of Bergen-Belsen. This is a pattern of behavior that repeats itself.

Yet in the horrific massacre of October 7, 2023, it was precisely the civilian sector that was first to stand up in the communities near Gaza, before the IDF as a whole understood what was happening and organized to fight back.

So it was very clear to me that in April 2025, together with the wreaths and on behalf of the organization, I would lay the heartwarming photograph of Kfir Bibas, may God avenge his blood, a smiling red-haired baby. His sweet smile broke through between the wreaths in glaring contrast. When we left, he remained behind as our representative in that terrible cemetery.

Kfir has become a symbol of the innocence of the children who were murdered in Bergen-Belsen, and not only there.

Next to the photograph we placed a sticker of Captain Omer Neutra, may God avenge his blood, who fell on October 7, 2023. The legacy of his grandparents as Holocaust survivors was a central part of his identity and his Zionism. It was what moved him to postpone his university studies in the United States, immigrate to Israel from New York as a lone soldier, and enlist as a tank commander in the IDF to defend the country. Tragically, he fell defending the Gaza border communities on the very first day, and his body was abducted. Omer was a true leader.

The chilling combination of Omer and Kfir together in that terrible place moved good people to come and lay more flowers.

Since the massacre, we have been boycotted by a handful of people in the Belsen memorial's management, whom I deeply despise.

The shocking connection between the massacre in Israel and the murders in Bergen-Belsen obliges us to reflect deeply on the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
